Reflection or rumination.
One moves you forward. The other keeps you company. There is a difference between reflection and rumination, and it is not always obvious from your internal perspective. Reflection creates space. It asks a new question or surfaces something you had not considered. Even when it feels slow, you are moving through your thought process. Rumination circles. It revisits the same thought, the same fear, the same scenario without landing anywhere new. Because it is still thinking, it can feel productive, but it is spinning in place, not insight. Here is how I notice the difference in myself. When I am reflecting, something shifts, even slightly. When I am ruminating, I feel the same tightness I started with, sometimes heavier. The body usually knows before the mind admits it. If you find yourself returning to the same thought again and again without resolution, pause and ask: am I learning something new here, or am I just keeping this thought alive? Returning to a repeating thought often points to something underneath the surface that has not yet been addressed. It is usually where the real work is, and where a conversation outside your own head becomes valuable. If you would like to explore what that looks like, I invite you to schedule a complimentary thirty-minute clarity call with me. Next week we sit with what it means to move forward as someone still becoming.
