I've arrived. So why am I still becoming?
Last week I passed my ICF PCC exam. A goal I set in 2020. Six years in the making. I knew early on that if I was going to do this work, I wanted to meet it fully. And after all of the time and energy invested, I reached it. The process to even qualify is layered. Hundreds of hours of coaching. Mentor coaching. Performance evaluations. Recorded session assessments. All of that before you ever sit down for the exam. I share that not to impress. I share it because I almost skipped past it entirely. I celebrated for about thirty minutes, then almost immediately, I caught myself asking what comes next? That drive is not new for me. It is part of what got me here. But this time, I slowed to reflect on my desire to move so quickly onto the next goal. The same drive that moves us toward something can make it hard to receive it when it arrives. Not because the work was rushed. If anything, this process required me to slow down, to practice, to refine over time. But there was still a pressure underneath it, one that I put on myself, so focused on reaching a milestone and believing that once I got there, something would settle. And what I am noticing now is that arriving does not quiet the question of becoming. It just changes the texture of it. I went on a few long walks last week as I was working to process this accomplishment. I was forcing myself to slow down. To take in everything around me, trees beginning to bloom, spring fully taking hold. Then, a quote from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich about the acorn popped into my head. Here it is in its entirety: "The oak sleeps in the acorn. The bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul, a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of reality." Recalling it felt like reassurance. This achievement did not begin with the exam. It did not begin this week. The coach I was being evaluated on is the coach I already am. The certification did not create that. It confirmed it. And if that is true, then what comes next is not something I need to force or rush toward. This year is moving fast enough. I am actually working to do the opposite over the next few weeks. To reflect on what I have achieved, and how it fits into who I am becoming. In this year of the Fire Horse, with everything rushing past and so much feeling urgent, I wonder if there is something you have already become that you have not let yourself receive yet. Not a goal still ahead. Something already here. Already confirmed by the work, and by who you have been in the doing of it. Is there something that you have already become that you have not let yourself receive yet?
