Easier or better?
Working in my yard feeds my soul even when it can be overwhelming from the weeds getting out of control. With all of this rain we have had in the past few weeks, just looking out onto my yard produces a level of anxiety that has me convincing myself I'd be better off to remain in my air conditioned space. Three years ago, I posted a reel on Instagram sharing the analogy of the weeds representing stuck ideas or beliefs in my mind. The voiceover was me noticing that some weeds came up easily, while others had complex roots that went deep and held on tightly. Some weeds even partially breaking off, the rest of the strong root firmly gripping the earth because I didn't pull just right. Much like the negative things we say to ourselves repeatedly, or the habits we can't seem to break and those behaviors we aren't even aware of. The thing about weeds, they always come back. Reflecting on that reel and looking out at the same yard, it is a different yard now than it was in 2023. Were the weeds different? They were showing up in different spots. Did the pulling get easier, or did I get better at pulling them? What actually changed is that I learned the weeds. Which one needs a slow steady pull, how to keep the pesky ones from snapping when I rush, and how to recognize the ones anchored much deeper than they appear. Different weeds, different grips. That is a skill, and skill requires practice. Our journey through life is a dynamic one. Whether we decide to dig out the weeds or stay inside looking out at them, they keep coming, even if in different forms. The lessons keep arriving and we keep getting tested on our growth. We can ignore them, or we can challenge ourselves to become aware and make a conscious choice. Is there a lesson you keep running across, are you pulling at it or watching from the window?
